It seems an unlikely pairing for South Beach, namely bronzy, ripped ab models and a heaping portion of Chinese food. But then again it's not your average Chinese food eatery, as Mr. Chow sets-up shop in a designer dining room at the new W South Beach. The dramatic two-story space is an indoor-outdoor design of floor-to-ceiling windows opening to white sand views with Moooi-inspired bistro chairs and groovy outdoor terrace. The main dining room is centered on a 123-foot Gold leaf and Swarovski crystal chandelier designed by Michael Chow himself. A separate bar and lounge will give nearby Gansevoort a run for its model money, with bite-size food menu and late night drinking scene typical of most high-end W locations.
The Food
It wasn’t always so. Once a Kung-Pao playground of thousand-calorie brown sauce dishes, Mr. Chow was a quick study of the new dining habits of the various London and Beverly Hills clientele he entertains. A lengthy menu of traditional Chinese entrees begins with vegetable or chicken dumplings, calamari or stuffed rolls cooked steamed, pan-fried or fully friend depending on your dietary direction. Main course is a medley of vegetable side dishes, traditional poultry and seafood specialties and classic meat dishes presented with an array of white wine, brown, white and cream sauces that are as healthy or calorie-packed as your swimsuit size desires.
